What is the Curly Girl Method?

A hair care approach that embraces your natural curl pattern

The Method

The Curly Girl Method (CGM) is a hair care routine designed to enhance and nurture naturally curly and wavy hair. Popularized by Lorraine Massey in her book Curly Girl: The Handbook, it focuses on avoiding ingredients that strip moisture, cause build-up, or damage your natural curl pattern.

The core principles are simple: avoid harsh sulfates (which strip natural oils), silicones (which create build-up that only sulfates can remove), and drying alcohols. Instead, use gentle cleansers, moisturizing conditioners, and styling products that work with your curls, not against them.

Why Ingredients Matter

Many everyday hair products contain ingredients that seem harmless but can damage curly hair over time. Silicones create a coating that blocks moisture. Harsh sulfates strip away natural oils your curls need. Some ingredients build up gradually, making your hair feel heavy and lifeless.

Reading ingredient lists can be overwhelming — INCI names are long, scientific, and hard to decode. That's where our checker comes in.

Our Ingredient Checker

Our checker goes beyond simple CG compatibility. Here's what makes it different:

Health Warnings

Flags ingredients with EU restrictions, known allergens, or potential irritants — information most checkers ignore.

Build-up Detection

Identifies ingredients that accumulate on hair over time, even if they're technically CG-approved.
